Yesterday I picked up Scott Pilgrim vol. 5: Scott Pilgrim vs. The Universe by Bryan Lee O’Malley, and oh mans is it the awesomes. Scott Pilgrim is basically my Harry Potter. It’s the best comic that I own, I look forward ravenously to every release, and I’ve read the books several times now.
Well, except for the most recent one. I just got it. Give me some time though…
Anyways, vol 5 is pretty amazing. At least, in the sense that all the Scott Pilgrims are pretty amazing. O’Malley combine videogames, romance, comedy and action fights into one tasty cocktail. I love the expressiveness of the characters, I love the callouts to old-school gaming, I love the dialogue (even though nobody talks like the characters in Scott Pilgrim, not even in the movies. Actually, probably because nobody talks like the characters in Scott Pilgrim) and I love the way that even in their weird, wacky fantasy world where you can beat up evil ex-boyfriends and they turn into loose change and kung-fu robots are completely mundane, everything remains pretty human and relatable.
I want to grow up and be Scott Pilgrim. This will be difficult because he is 24 and I am 25.
